New Orleans Daiquiris

New Orleans Daiquiris

For more than a quarter-century, New Orleans has been hooked on daiquiris. You can't go anywhere in the city without passing a daiquiri shop, an establishment that serves daiquiris, or a daiquiri drive-thru stand. Daiquiris are blended with pride and innovation and the industry continues to snowball.

Some say the popularity of these frozen slushy drinks is an upshot of the hot and steamy New Orleans weather. Others suggest ice, fruit juice, and 151-proof rum in a Styrofoam cup blends quite naturally into a city that cherishes music and adores its festivals.

The typical New Orleans daiquiri isn't made from your classic blend of ice, lime juice, sugar, and rum. Rum is no longer even an imperative. The most popular daiquiri in New Orleans is made of crushed ice, artificially flavored syrups, and inexpensive high-proof alcohol.

There are those, of course, who prefer some artistry to their daiquiri. The Hemmingway Daiquiri, for example, is a blend of white rum, Luxardo maraschino liqueur, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and (optional) simple syrup. On the other hand, the Melpomene Daiquiri is an entirely different concoction of light rum, lime juice, honey/apple syrup, and apple juice.

But should the mood strike you with key ingredients missing, there's no reason to panic. Regardless of where you are in New Orleans, a 190 Antifreeze or Hypnotic Chill Daiquiri is mere minutes away.
