Ole! It’s time to swarm the streets of downtown New Orleans at the 11th Annual Running of the Bulls! Set to coincide with the world-famous Encierro (Running of the Bulls) at the San Fermin Festival in Pamplona, Spain, the New Orleans version of the event is uniquely it’s own.

El Txupinazo

The festival kicks off on Friday, July 7th with El Txupinazo, the official kickoff party for San Fermin in Nueva Orleans. Festivities will take place at Little Gem Saloon from 5p.m. – 9 p.m., and for one ticket price, you can enjoy live music, an open bar and food from Commander’s Palace, SoBou, Little Gem, Appoline and Bayona.

El Encierro (The Run)

The official procession of San Fermin in Nueva Orleans begins at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 8th, followed by the runners taking off at 8:00 a.m. sharp. The run begins and ends at the Sugar Mill (1021 Convention Center Blvd.), and of course there will be parties before and after the main event, where Sangria, tapas, live Latin music and good cheer are presented.

The main requirement is that all who plan to participate wear white clothing and have a red scarf or long red cloth tied around their waists and necks. Of course, this being New Orleans, many of the participants take it even further, showing up in clever and imaginative costumes, especially dressed up as matadors and bulls. There is a $15 registration fee to participate in the run and the event can get quite crowded, so preregistering and arriving early are highly encouraged.

Those who just want to spectate the run from a “safe distance” are advised to stake out their places on the sidewalks along the route well ahead of time. This is a very popular event that grows every year and good viewing positions may well be at a premium come race time.

The Bulls

Though the event is meant to pay homage to the world famous, Encierro of Pamplona, there is one major difference. The "Bulls," for NOLA’s San Fermin are the young ladies from the New Orleans-based all-female flat-track derby team, the Big Easy Rollergirls!

These "RollerBulls" skate behind the runners and, as they catch up with the slowest runners along the 12-block French Quarter route, they are allowed to whack them with soft foam-core wiffle ball bats. Of course this is much less dangerous than the real bulls that run through the streets of Spain.

Other San Fermin Events

A San Fermin Feast!

Two other events connected to the San Fermin Festival – both of which are free and open to the public – take place on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, July 8-9. They are the Fiesta de Pantalones (Pants Feast) on Saturday night and El Pobre de Mi (Poor Me) on Sunday.

The Saturday event features live entertainment and cocktails, and attendees are strongly encouraged to come dressed Pamplonese style. The Sunday event, typically starting at 12 noon, offers readings from the works of Ernest Hemingway, whose novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, popularized worldwide interest in the Pamplona Running of the Bulls. There will also be a Hemingway look-alike contest, an original skit contest, and tapas, along with Spanish specialty drinks.

A portion of the proceeds for this series of fiestas will go towards Animal Rescue New Orleans. For details on registration and special packages, visit the event’s website at
